Avon: Direct selling, MLM, pyramid scheme?
In this blog, I wanted to cover all facts and basics of Avon Cosmetics the company and answer a few key questions to do with direct selling / MLM, like:
- What is MLM?
- What is direct selling?
- What is the cheapest direct selling company to join?
- What is a pyramid scheme?
- Is Avon a pyramid scheme?
This comes after 15 years in the business and learning everything I know as I have gone along.
First things first,
What is Direct Selling?
Direct selling is a method of marketing and retailing goods and services directly to the consumers, in their homes or in any other location away from permanent retail premises. It is usually conducted in a face-to-face manner – either where products are demonstrated to an individual , or to a group or where a catalogue is left with the consumer and where the direct seller call as later to collect orders. Direct selling is now firmly established as a recognised channel of retail distribution around the world, and in the UK, over 400,000 people are involved with direct selling. It is a vibrant, growing industry offering a flexible earning opportunity to all, whatever age, culture, gender or ability.

Most businesses / shops have lots of outgoings, like head office - stock - rental on shops - staff etc. Whereas being a direct seller cuts out all of them outgoings with Avon. You only spend once you have sold the products, and commission is cash in hand.
What is MLM?
lets look at Wikipedias description:
Multi-level marketing (MLM) is a controversial marketing strategy for the sale of products and/or services where the revenue of the MLM company is derived from a non-salaried workforce (also called participants, and variously known as "salespeople", "distributors", "consultants", "promoters", "independent business owners", etc.) selling the company's products/services, while the earnings of the participants is derived from a pyramid-shaped commission system.
But hang on, 'pyramid shaped commission system'?
What is a pyramid Scheme?
Pyramid schemes require you to join for a fee – and the only way to get back your money is to persuade other people to join and take their fees.
Scheme members are asked to sell goods or services through other members rather than direct to clients.
People at the top of the pyramid make money from the fees of people lower down, rather than selling a legitimate product.
The business model is unsustainable, and those at the bottom of the pyramid lose their fees with no prospect of recovering the money.
Is Avon a Pyramid Scheme?
Let's take a look at the above text, but this time broken down for your understanding that Avon is a safe and sustainable company.
Pyramid schemes require you to join for a fee (Avon is free to try. There are 2 administration fees: 1 when you place your very first order and therefore have earned the money before you spend it, of just £10. Then when you place a second order, there is a final fee of £6. You make your money before you pay a thing, no need to spend on brochures or a start up kit either. You will be straight in the profit, or you simply don't start & place an order) – and the only way to get back your money is to persuade other people to join and take their fees. (If you decide to become a Sales Leader and recruit your own team members, you do not take anybody's money to join & to be 100% transparent - the administration fee of Avon Leadership is £35, which is easily earned with Avon's generous bonus plan & commission structure)
Scheme members are asked to sell goods or services through other members rather than direct to clients. (Avon is a direct selling company - therefore we sell direct to clients as described above)
People at the top of the pyramid make money from the fees of people lower down (we do not earn any commission from Administration fees), rather than selling a legitimate product All commission earned is from the products our entire team sells. We are all equal - and we can all earn more than our upliner if we work harder).
The business model is unsustainable, and those at the bottom of the pyramid lose their fees with no prospect of recovering the money (Everybody who joins Avon Cosmetics, starts off at the top of their own structure, and if you do not feel you are earning money - you do not need to join or continue in the business).
So the short and sweet answer is no, Avon Cosmetics is not a pyramid scheme.

Direct Selling company joining prices
Whilst writing this blog, I have kept in mind that I must be fair to all other companies. So I will just give you the information I found from official sites for each company, and you make your decision there. May I also note, some companies do not wish to disclose information like joining fees online and must be discussed with an independent distributor over the phone.
Forever Living - A Business Owner Box (Formerly the New Distributors Pack (NDP)) is just under £200 in the UK. If you really can’t find the funds for your box, there is another way. You can join the company purely by placing an order for products for over £100 , however you will not get as much commission this way.
Kleeneze - There are 2 different 'success kits' you can choose from, either £125, £99 or £50, however if you can't afford either, you can have the 99 kit in 3 instalments of £25, £50 and £50 increasing the fee to £125.
Juice Plus+ - To join the Juice Plus franchise business the start up cost is £65. There is no stock to buy for your franchise.
Younique - A Younique presenter kit is £65 and comprises of products.
Utility Warehouse - The joining fee is £100. If you join us as a new partner and have a customer account it will only cost £50 to join. If you join us as a Partner at £100 and subsequently become a member within 30 days from signing up as a Partner, you can claim a £50 refund of your joining fee from Partner Services.
Herbalife - At Herbalife, we value the relationship our Members build with their customers. That is why we always recommend customers take advantage of the knowledge, support and encouragement of their personal Member. This relationship is the reason we do not publish a price list online.
Avon is FREE to try
Avon is the 2nd largest direct selling company in the world, and is also the world's oldest / most established direct selling company!

This award was based on our Leaders OWN work with the highest growth in G1 Downlines. Leanna Biagioni was our superstar this time round with an extra qualifying Leader and a further NQSL!
G1 Sales Growth
This award was based on our Leaders OWN work with the highest growth in G1 Sales. Zofia Zosanska had an absolutely incredible 295% increase in G1 Sales between campaign 9 - 14!
Total Team Sales Growth
This award was based on our Leaders work with the highest growth in Total Team Sales. Michelle Byerley was awarded another trophy for having a huge increase in her total team sales growth of £8,138.23!
Total Team Leader Growth
This award was based on our Leaders work with the highest growth in Total Team Sales Leaders. Zoe Lincoln had an increase of 2 qualifying leaders in just 5 campaigns so quite rightly deserved this award.
Total Team Representative Growth
This award was based on our Leaders work with the highest growth in Total Team Representatives. Michelle Byerley has been busy! With a total of 79 Total Team Representative growth, we couldn't be more proud.
Rising Star of the Year
This award will be presented to someone that has shown courage, enthusiasm, passion and above all has proven they truly are the next Rising Star. Maria Underwood continues to wow us with her effort and dedication to being the best Representative and Sales Leader she can, which is truly inspiring.
Leader of the Year
This award will be presented to 1 special person that has shown their Leadership skills through determination and Pure hard work Showing and sharing what it takes to be a true Leader. Leanna Biagioni has grown by 33% Representatives and 50% Leaders over the weeks leading up to our Recognition meal and that is really something to be proud of.
Team of the Year
This award will be presented to the TEAM that works together, achieves together and represents the true meaning of Team Spirit. Last but by no means least, our favourite award to announce. Back in 2008, Gail achieved Team of the Year and to this date - it is her most honourable prize and one she will never forget.

Howard has gone from Coordinator to Advanced Leader in the past year and Jane continues to grow steadily year after year without fail as an Executive Sales Leader.

It took 5 months to make enough money to quit my old job. I needed a hundred pounds a week – £60 food bill, £20 electric and £20 gas. So I had to earn a hundred pounds for my leadership business. That was my first goal and I managed to quit my job after 6 months.
My husband is also working with Avon. He joined after 2 years – saw how happy I was, and then he saw the income and that turned his head a bit. He’s never going back to the supermarket.

Without Avon, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I would not be in my home, I wouldn’t be driving the beautiful car I drive. I wouldn’t be going on trips all over the world if it wasn’t for Avon. There’s that feeling of belonging with Avon and I don’t think I’ve ever belonged anywhere else. That’s why I say they are my family.”
Proudest moment – winning the UK team of the year in 2008. She’s written a book and got a few awards for that. Won the DSA award in 2012 – the only Avon person to ever win it. Out of all network marketing companies in the UK.
Goals
When I first joined Avon I didn’t have any money. I bought my first suit from Oxfam for £10 and it was a NEXT suit. I’d never been able to drop in Next but I felt like a million dollars. My eldest Ashleigh had never had a brand new school uniform, never. One of the moments that will always stick with me is the day I took him out and bought him everything brand new, from a pair of Clark’s shoes to his coat. So Avon has allowed me to do things that I will never take for granted. I can go into Sainsbury’s and spend £200 and not worry about it. My budget used to be £60 and I’d have to tally it up.
I’ve been on holidays abroad I’d never have dreamed of. We’ve been to Disneyworld in Florida, for three weeks, we went to Lapland to see Santa Claus. We’re doing a loft conversion. It’s quite amazing what it’s enabled us to do. The goals that we thought were out of reach are actually achievable now.
The friends that I’ve met – it sounds cheesy but they are my friends before Avon.
It was always my aim to meet new people and that’s what gets me out of bed every day is that I’m gonna meet someone like myself from 20 years ago when I was on income support with two children and didn’t think I had any sort of future before me. I love being a part of their journey and building relationships.
The relationships I have built have been absolutely amazing.

How will the Nextdoor app build my Avon business?
Let's firstly hear it from the people that count - YOU.
I am super excited for the future of this app, it literally is just the beginning and there is so much more to look forward to. It's already a massive hit in America, giving neighbours the option to "claim their business". I am hoping they do because it'll be another step in the right direction for us to build our business!
How it works
When getting set up, it asks you to confirm your home address so it can add you to your local neighbourhood. You set up a profile all about yourself, a bit like a Facebook profile, and then you are free to talk to your neighbours and nearby neighbourhoods!
Upon registering, I found myself placed in Bincombe, and able to communicate with 14 nearby neighbourhoods. How awesome?! Upon inspection of the site, I found people "welcoming" me to the app and saying hi to me. I had a browse and found classified ads, free to good home posts, local updates like rat holes spotted in gardens (seriously!), and classic recommendation posts for pet sitters etc.
It is FREE to post in the group.

Not only can you make posts, but you can create events, surveys, private message your neighbours and alert them if something was to ever happen! I don't know about you, but this seems like one of the best ideas for an app I have seen in a long time.
What should I post about?
It is worth noting that Nextdoor is not like Facebook, or Twitter, or any other social media site you may be on. They don't want to know what you ate for breakfast or to see 100 posts a day, these are neighbours of yours that see you on a daily basis - so remember to be polite.
When you first join, it's a good idea to write an awesome bio about yourself so people know you're a nice easy going person. Make sure to mention you're an Avon Representative, but also talk about anything else you do for the community - e.g, zumba classes, dog walking, local nurse etc
We are still new to the app ourselves, but definitely finding the most success when not spamming our neighbours. 1 friendly post introducing yourself as an Avon Representative and asking if anyone would like you to drop them off a book is enough. I recommend only reposting this advert once your neighbours have interacted long enough for your post to be unseen.
Another good way is to "welcome" all new members to the group. Say hello and introduce yourself, like you would any neighbour!
Make sure you don't sound too business, as it may upset the people you're on the app with. Remember to use it to your advantage of looking for babysitters, finding a new bike, giving stuff away to a new home.

Have fun with it - add your pets too! That way people may start to recognise your pooches and remind them that they need to ask you about that new Avon product they seen on the TV advert.
Just be yourself
Don't get me wrong, I am not an expert with this app just yet. I am still learning as I go along 🙂 The best advise I can give is to just be yourself on there. Treat the page like a "buy and sell" page from Facebook, or even better yet, your personal Facebook page. Attraction marketing is one of the best ways to attract the right kind of customers to your business.
3 top tips
1. Look for leads
You can use it to look for leads yourself. As an Avon Representative, perhaps check the Nextdoor app for your neighborhood every day, then every time someone comes on looking for a good, reliable Rep you can say, “Hey! Give us a call!”
2. Give referrals
If you have Nextdoor on your phone you can refer other people. I refer not only clients, but people that I know, like and trust to people who are looking for those specific services. This in turn helps me to be a good networker, and it can help you to be a good networker as well. It’s always a good idea to network.
3. Find services for yourself
You can use it to find reputable services to help you with your business. A lot of times I might not even be actively searching for a product or service, but I’ll see someone else recommend a company, and I’ll make a note to keep them in mind for when I do need them.

Finding Avon customers just got sooo easy
After selling Avon since 2002 I have a few ideas I would like to share with you.
The trick is to read through all the ideas and choose what best suits you, your needs and your own personal circumstances.
Postcards and posters
Some great and easy places to pop a card or poster
Google your local community and search for : Office blocks, banks, care homes, salons, post offices, surgeries play centres, mother and toddler groups, WI Groups, schools, churches, the list is endless. Now go visit them and ask if you could leave a brochure. Visit these places too;
- Corner shop windows
- Church hall notice boards
- Community centre notice boards
- Post office notice boards
- College notice boards
- University notice boards
- Mother and toddler groups
Social Media social sharing
- Open your online Avon store
- Join FB and other social media sites and share your online store through it
- Join Buy and sell groups on social media sites and share your store in them
More obvious places to find/gain more Avon customers and leave your Avon brochures
- Use Avon products yourself. One of the best ways to sell a product is to know everything about it. Your regular discount and demos allow you to save money and try the products yourself first.
- Ask your customers for product reviews. When you pass out orders, ask your customer to let you know how the products perform. This is a great way for you to learn about products so that you can offer more information to other customers.
- Share your products. If you work in an office, make sure you have hand lotion to share with your co-workers. I have gotten several orders just by letting others try the lotion sitting on my desk. Another Avon rep keeps extra tubes of hand cream for on-the-spot sales.
- Use your own network of friends and family. Share your excitement about your new business and people will be excited with you. Most of your friends already are familiar with Avon products and so they will be your easiest customers. Everyone
is a member of some organization or workplace. You have an extended network too!
- Wear Avon jewelry. I get so many compliments when I wear a new Avon necklace. Most jewelry comes in sets, like a necklace and bracelet. They are designed to compliment fashion or seasonal colors. I have had a few tell me they were not sure if a necklace would match their outfit, but with the no-hassle return guarantee they were not afraid to return it if it did not. Oh, and I haven't had any jewelry returns, yet!
- Share your business cards.
- Order plenty of brochures. Brochures are really your "store." They are designed well, colorful, and cheap. The photos are very clear and often show how the makeup looks on a real person.
- Keep brochures handy. I keep the latest campaign brochure in my purse, as well as an outlet sale flyers.
- Buy stickers for the backs of brochures. My stickers match my business cards and large print makes them easy to read. Stickers include my name, phone number, email address, and website address. Brochures, stickers and business cards are powerful sales tools!
- Don't forget special offers. Everyone loves a bargain! Use your imagination to come up with catchy ideas. How about free wrapping for Mother's Day? Birthday and anniversary reminders? BOGO - buy one get one?
- Try, Recommend a friend and get 10% off your next order.
- Always upsell. This is a key sales tip that really works. Say your customer buys a certain fragrance; draw her attention to the lotion. Got an order for a necklace? Point out the ring on the same page. Did your customer choose a skincare product for aging skin? Make sure she knows about the eye lift cream.
- Attend sales meetings.
- Make samples and demos work for you. Attach a sample on the page of the newest brochure where the item is listed with a paper clip. Encourage your customers to try the product. Buy a demo and either use it yourself or give to a faithful customer to try.
- Holiday and special days. Remind your customer that holidays and special occasions tend to sneak up on us, and you have great gifts for just about anyone.
- Don't forget the male customer. We tend to forget about the guys - but they have daughters home from college, wives who love to great makeup, and mothers who love to be treated to a thinking-of-you-mom gift. Avon has some great products especially for men. Check out the after-shave conditioners and the foot care line. Don't forget about SSS for camping, fishing and working in the garden.
- Use the no-hassle Return Policy to close the deal. Avon promises, "If you're not happy with any purchase, just return it for an exchange or your money back. No questions. No fuss. No problems." Even if the makeup is opened, if the customer is unhappy Avon will give a no-stress return.
- Set a goal to find at least 2 new customers every campaign.
- Use the “Power of 3” – Make 3 new contacts every day.
- Comparison shop and be ready to give results to contacts.
- Increase the number of brochures ordered by 10 every campaign.
- Leave a brochure at 1 new business every campaign.
- Wear an Avon logo pin or shirt – It’s free advertisement to those who don’t know you are an Avon representative.
- Have 1 product each campaign that is the campaign special – Hand out info and samples about it to every contact and offer a discount of 10% or 20% if they purchase it in that campaign.
- Have a positive attitude – It sells.
- Show pages from national magazines that feature news about Avon products.
- Spray your brochures with fragrances.
- Find helpers in businesses, churches, schools, etc. and reward them for taking orders for you.
- Leave a basket of demos in a business and pick them up the next day with orders too!!!
- Pass our lumpy brochures out to businesses. (samples in flagged pages)
- Advertise a “NEW CUSTOMER SALE” – Choose 2 or 3 products each campaign and offer a special discount to the “FIRST-TIME” customers.
- Have an “OLD-TIMERS” special – Offer a special discount, a free product or a free trial size to any regular customer who gets you a new customer.
- Have a special raffle drawing for any customer who has a minimum £20.00 order.
- Have a “BUNNY SALE” for Easter – Offer 5% off every product that starts with the letter “B”.
- Place business cards on every available notice board.
- Talk to every customer about fundraising for the Avon speak out and breast cancer charities.
- Wear different Avon fragrances
- Take Skin-So-Soft samples to any place and organization where workers are subject to bugs.
- Put a sign in your car window
- Advertise in local papers – Especially clearance sales, special discounts, or introduction of new products.
- Give each customer an extra brochure and ask them to give them to family and friends.
- Give a brochure and sample to every person behind the check-out.
- Have an open house of Avon products during holiday seasons and offer free gift wrapping.
- Offer an “AVON PARTY” at businesses during lunch hours.
- Always carry a demo basket with you – Your customers will have friends visiting too.
- Carry a “BARGAIN BASKET” – Purchase inexpensive products from outlet flyers and sell these to people who do not want to place an order. Also a good way to sell used “demos” or unwanted products that may accumulate.
- Keep extra products on hand for people who may need a gift to give on the spur of the moment. Avon cookbooks make great wedding shower gifts.
- Know your products!!!! Make brand comparisons and provide copies for your customers.
- Set up a table in your local school fetes, car boots, craft fairs.

CONGRATULATIONS
You have opened your Avon online store and you are here because you have received your 1st online order!
First things first. There are 2 types of orders you can recieve from your lovely Avon customers.
Avon customers delivery choices
- A Direct delivery order
- Representative delivery order
The good news is you earn of both of them!!
The great news is that ALL Direct Delivery orders that are placed through your store means that you don't have to do anything at all. Just sit back and watch your earnings increase 🙂
Choosing Avon Direct delivery
As a new Representative you will want as many people all of the UK to see your store and choose Direct Delivery. That way you are not delivering it, but Avon are. You earn money for simply sharing your store on social media and emails. The customer will order, the store will take their money and teh store will deliver. you will receive commission into your Avon account, click My Balance to see it arrive.
If it is your 1st campaign as an Avon representative then you will be paid the commission at 20% on all your customers orders. This is because you haven't placed an order yet so Avon have nothing to evaluate to.
If you are past your first campaign you earn the % you achieved last time, and that 20% if your campaigned totaled £87 or more, or 25% if your campaign totaled £160 or more.
When you open your store for the 1st time you need to be sharing it with everyone you know and everyone you don't know! You have no control of your readers home location we strongly recommend you set up your store for Direct Delivery Only and have Avon deliver it. Here are some great ideas and tips on opening your store and sharing it everywhere.
Make sure you share your store on all your favourite social media sites too.
When someone places their Avon Direct Delivery order, you sometimes (don't rely on them) recieve an email from Avon telling you that you have a new Customer that has placed a Direct Delivery order through your store. The good news is, you don't HAVE to do anything with the order, although it would be nice if you sent a message and thanked them personally for their order. I send a letter and a magnet in the post to them. It's called a (TNT) Tiny Noticeable Things. You can do this for your customers and keep them loyal to you. I buy sheets of magnetic paper from ebay and you can find great prices if you do more searching around the internet too!.
Choosing Avon Representative Delivery
If you decide to keep the option of you delivering these orders, perhaps you only intend to share your store locally, when your Avon customer chooses the Avon representative Delivery there is a small process you need to go through in order to accept both the New Avon Customer and their New Avon Representative Delivery order.
You need to know some very important things about accepting these types of orders too.
TOP TIPS on accepting Avon Representative orders
- You MUST open (Check) your store every single morning and every single night! Without exception. Just imagine your Avon online store was a physical shop that your customers could come along to any time of the day, have a browse, look around, and either place an order or come back later. This IS your physical store, and if you don't open it like you would if it were in the high street how are you to know if anyone has been in for a browse or indeed purchased from you? Don't rely on Avon to tell you someone has been by your shop, be proactive, get excited, share your store and go check for customers every morning and every night (theoretically closing time).
- You only have 24 hours to Accept a NEW AVON CUSTOMER so Tip 1 is an absolute must. If you don't accept them within 24 hours Avon will pass them onto the next available Avon Representative, and you will have lost that customer forever! Don't let that happen.
- You will have 72 hours to Accept a repeat customer's order. Again, if you fail to accept your existing customers orders it will be passed onto the nearest Avon Representative. Don't let that happen either.
How to accept an Avon Customers Order through your Online store
- You will need to check your store for new orders every day and evening (like suggested above). When you see that a new Representative delivery order has been placed, you will see this;
You will need to click 'Process order in your Representative Website'.
- Now you will need to login to your Avon website. Once logged in it will take you immediately to a page like this;
You will need to 'Tick the ACCEPT ORDER' circle as shown above and click the 'UPDATE ORDER' tab too.
- You will now see this screen;
Simply click 'CONTINUE'
- Once you CLICK CONTINUE you will see the following screen;
You can now click 'START MY ORDER' or 'PENDING ORDER'.
- By clicking either of the above will take you to this next page;
AT the top right of this page you will see 'VIEW ORDER' click it.
- Now you will see all your orders, including your regular order from your other customers you serve face to face.
Here you will clearly see you new Avon customers orders added to your regular order
Click 'View Subtotal'
- Once you click 'VIEW SUBTOTAL' you will see something like this;
Here you can clearly see the total of individual orders that your customers have placed via your store and requested for you to deliver to them direct.
- You will also see any orders you have stated to place for your regular face to face/territory customers too.
You have now successfully accepted and added your New Avon customers orders to your regular order. Don't forget you will need to make a note of their address, name, contact details and order details. The best way to do this is by going back to your online store where you first noticed you had a new customer order.
Click 'Show order details'
- Here is what you will see. Complete details of your customers order plus Name, address, and contact;
Print this out and pop it with all your other customers orders ready for delivery day 🙂
It is a good thing to contact the new customer to confirm you have her order and when you will be delivering. Well done, you have successfully accepted your Avon online store representative delivery orders and have added another valuable Avon customer to your data base.
TOP TIPS
If a customer has requested for a Representative delivery but you live too far away to do this, simply click their email address on the information left with their order and email them some further options.
I accept Paypal and bank transfers in way of payment and depending on the size of their order offer a very low or even free postage and packaging!
Always message or call all your customers and thank them for their orders.
Send a (TNT) in the post as a way of a thank you for their order.
Yet again Avon have pulled out all the stops.
